Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about getting on the course, using your NASTAR account and understanding your results.

Getting started and race day

What is NASTAR, and who can race?

NASTAR is a nationwide recreational ski and snowboard racing program open to anyone. Resorts and clubs run local races, and NASTAR connects your results to a permanent racer record and a national handicap and ranking system. You do not need racing experience to take part. Learn how NASTAR works.

Where can I race?

Use Where to Race to find participating mountains. Check with the mountain for operating days, course hours, fees and current conditions before you go.

How do I register? Do I need to do it every season?

Register at NASTAR.com to receive or claim your permanent NASTAR ID and sign the NASTAR waiver for the current season. Keep that ID wherever you race. When you return in a new season and log in, you will be prompted to sign that season's waiver. You do not need a new account. Registration help and next steps.

Is registering with NASTAR the same as entering a race?

No. Your NASTAR account identifies you across races and seasons. A resort may also offer optional online registration for a specific race or event. Follow that event's instructions if you want to enter it online; online event registration is not required for every NASTAR race.

What does it cost?

Creating a NASTAR account is free. The mountain or event organizer sets race fees. Check locally for race pricing, lift access and what your payment includes.

What should I bring, and what happens when I arrive?

Bring your ski or snowboard equipment, a helmet and your NASTAR ID. Helmets are required to race. Check in with the race staff, pay the applicable local fee and follow their instructions for the course and your helmet-number sticker. Tell the starter which discipline you are racing. Read the race-day guide.

Are NASTAR Nationals or Regional events being held?

NASTAR Nationals and Regional events are not currently being operated. Local NASTAR racing continues at participating resorts and clubs.

Your NASTAR ID and account

I have raced before but never created a login. Do I already have a record?

You may already have one. Search for your racer record before creating a new account. Claim your existing record through the available login setup rather than starting a second race history. If you cannot access it, use the recovery options on the login page or contact NASTAR.

How do I sign in or recover my NASTAR ID or password?

Use your NASTAR ID and password on the login page. For help, open “Forgot Your NASTAR ID or Password?” there. If you cannot use the email associated with your record, contact NASTAR rather than creating a replacement account. More account-access help.

How do I update my information?

Log in, open your racer record and select PERSONAL. Under Tools, choose “Edit Personal/Team Information.” Keep your email and home state current. See the account-editing guide.

What if I have more than one racer record?

Log in to the record you want to keep and use “Merge Race Results” under PERSONAL. Some matches can be merged through that tool; others require a request to NASTAR staff. Only combine records that belong to the same person. Follow the duplicate-record instructions.

Results and race records

Where can I see my results?

Find your racer record and open RESULTS. Select the season you want to view. Your record brings together uploaded results from participating mountains, along with rankings and badges. Learn about your race record.

When will my results appear?

The resort or club uploads its race results to NASTAR. Posting time depends on the operator; results are not guaranteed to appear immediately or within 24 hours. If a race is missing, contact the operator first.

What should I do about a wrong time, missing run or result on the wrong record?

Contact the race operator with your NASTAR ID, the race date and a description of the problem. The operator can review and correct its uploaded results. If your results are split between duplicate records, use the merge process. Results troubleshooting.

Handicaps, rankings and medals

What does my handicap mean?

Your handicap measures how much longer your run took than the course's Par Time. A handicap of 15 means your time was 15 percent longer. Lower is faster relative to Par Time, so you can track progress even when you race on different courses. How handicaps work.

What is Par Time, and why is there a pacesetter?

A local pacesetter's run and certified handicap establish Par Time for the course. Par Time represents a zero-handicap run and gives the race its comparison standard. It is calculated, rather than simply being the fastest racer's time. Par Time explained.

Why do I have results but no ranking yet?

Check the season, discipline and ranking category you selected. A resort ranking can be earned from one race. Standard age-group State and National Rankings for alpine, snowboard and telemark require results from three separate race days. Some other ranking categories use different rules, and rankings update separately from race uploads. Understand the ranking categories.

How are rankings different from medals?

A medal recognizes a race performance against the handicap standard for your age, gender and discipline. A ranking compares your season performance with other racers in the selected category. Earning a medal does not necessarily mean you have completed the race days needed for a ranking. Explore NASTAR rankings.

Which age group and discipline apply to me?

Your age group is based on your age on December 31 for the NASTAR season and stays the same throughout that season. See the age groups. Tell race staff if you are using a different discipline that day. Discipline discounts affect medal and team-point calculations; they do not replace the actual handicap shown in your results.

How do I earn and collect a medal?

Your handicap is compared with the medal chart for your group. Ask race staff where to collect the medal you earned. Custom NASTAR medals carry the mountain's name or approved logo, making them a keepsake of where you raced. Contact that mountain about an uncollected or replacement medal. More about NASTAR medals.

Are online badges the same as medals?

No. Badges recognize achievements on your racer record. Physical medals are awarded through the local race program. Open BADGES on your record to see your achievements and the requirements shown there.

Friends and teams

How can I follow friends' results?

Log in and use the buddy feature on racer records to add people you want to follow. Your BUDDIES tab gives you a way to return to their records and compare results.

Can we compete as a team if we race at different mountains?

Yes. NASTAR's online Family/Friends, Club and Resort teams bring together members' season results. Members do not have to race together or at the same mountain. Choose your teams through “Edit Personal/Team Information” on your record. How online teams work.

Is an online team the same as a local race league?

An online NASTAR team is part of the season ranking system. A local league or team event has its own schedule, entry arrangements and scoring format. Ask the organizer how to join and how that event is scored.

Still need help? Contact NASTAR. For a specific race or result correction, start with the resort or club that ran it.
