Pacesetter Database

Background

Each NASTAR resort is required to have pacesetters with certified pacesetting handicaps. To earn certification, pacesetters must either race against a certified pacesetter during a regular NASTAR race or at a locally organized pacesetting race, after which the resort must contact NASTAR staff to have the pacesetter's handicap officially set. Alternatively, a pacesetter can participate in a NASTAR race without a pacesetter present, and the resort must then contact NASTAR staff to assign a handicap. In this case, the handicap is calculated based on the race's Virtual Par Time.

Each NASTAR resort must enter their pacesetters in the timing software. To simplify the process, pacesetters are looked up by last name and they are assigned a pacesetting number. Each computer must assign pacesetters and each pacesetter is given a "P" number in the timing software (e.g. P1, P2, etc.). When timing a race, a "P" number or pacesetter bib number is entered in the start of the timing queue. The software automatically calculates the par time using the pacesetter's time and handicap.

These pacesetter bib numbers are specific to each computer and they are used only when timing. Resorts may have up to 30 pacesetter/handicap combinations (suit, coat or slalom).

How to view the pacesetter configuration within the timing software:

  • Select the "Edit Pacesetters" option from the "Race Header/Pacesetters" page

  • Alternatively, choose "Edit" -> "Pacesetters" from the navigation menu

To add a pacesetter to the timing software configuration:

  • Click on the Edit Pacesetters tile on the Race Header / Pacesetters tab.

  • Click on a blank P column. A screen will come up allowing you to enter the Last Name or partial name to search for the the pacesetter.

  • Click on the Pacesetter's name to add them to your list of pacesetters. Repeat the process for each pacesetter's Suit, Coat and SL handicap.

  • Pacesetters can have multiple "P" numbers (i.e. one for coat, one for suit and one for slalom)

  • Certified Pacesetter Listing

To remove a Pacesetter from your configuration:

  • Select the pacesetter’s name

  • Put a mark in the circle next to delete at the bottom of the page

  • Click OK.

To enter a Pacesetter manually:

Pacesetters should only be entered manually if they cannot be found in the Pacesetter Database. If this is the case, go to nastar.com and lookup the pacesetter's handicap. All races with pacesetters that are entered manually will be flagged for review.

  • Select the option to, ‘Enter manually’

  • Fill in the name (along with suit or coat) and the handicap.

In the picture above you can see that the first three letters of the name Smith have been entered in the Name or Partial name box. Entering the pacesetter’s name will reduce the size of the list to help you quickly find the pacesetter you are looking for.

Note: Pacesetters can have four handicaps. One handicap wearing a race suit, one handicap wearing a coat for both GS and for Slalom. Pacesetters' handicaps must be selected based on the clothes he/she is wearing. There is generally a 3-5% difference between the suit and coat handicaps.

Manually Entered Pacesetter Handicaps

If a pacesetter is not on the list of certified pacesetters in the database, they can be entered manually.

Entering pacesetters manually will result in your race getting flagged for review by NASTAR. If a pacesetter's handicap has not been approved, NASTAR may change the pacesetters handicap and race results may be corrected. When a race is corrected, medals and handicaps received at the race will be different than the official results posted online. Revising race results can be problematic so avoid entering pacesetters manually unless the pacesetter's handicap has been approved.

The integrity of the NASTAR program must be maintained by Certified NASTAR Pacesetters setting the Par Time. Pacesetters racing to the best of their ability is the only way to maintain NASTAR's National Standard.

Contact Geoff Elder at NASTAR to coordinate a pacesetting race. All pacesetting results must be posted as a standard NASTAR race and all handicapping requests must be submitted for review and approval.
