National Championship Overview
03.18.2021 | Bill Madsen
The NASTAR National Championships will be an exciting week of activities. Race registration includes a Swix boot bag, races, live music, pacesetting by U.S. Ski Team athletes, awards, prize money and slalom racing. Participants and paid guests will receive discounts on lift tickets and lodging and they will be given a credential that provides two lunches at the Spyder Sabich Picnic Palace.
Racers are grouped by ability division, age and gender. Each participant will take a minimum of two runs to record the lowest handicap but participants should be prepared to take additional runs as conditions and time allow. Due to COVID limitations we can not have an awards presentation. Awards can be picked up in the registration room in the base village conference center. Medallions will be provided to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place within each age, gender and divisional group.
The 32 male and 32 female racers that score the most NASTAR Points during their divisional race will be invited to compete in the finals the next day. The Race of Champions finals will be a head-to-head single elimination handicapped race that will award prize money to top three men and women. Qualified racers carry their winning handicap into the race to level the playing field so that young and veteran racers have an equal opportunity to win and become an overall NASTAR National Champion.
Racers that score a handicap/medal that is above their qualifying division will get bumped up and they will compete the next day in the divisional race (Competition Format).
In addition to the National Championship races, there will be a warmup race on Monday. The NASTAR Slalom Championship will kick off the racing action. Participants will compete in a two run stubby gate slalom race where their best handicap is used to place racers. Participants are placed in either the Platinum/Gold division or the Silver/Bronze division based on the best handicap earned during the race. Participants will be placed in their division based on the best handicap earned during the two race runs.
